Mr Vyapoory, also called Barlen, is the vice president of the Republic of Mauritius. Prior to that he was the High Commissioner of the Republic of Mauritius in South Africa with accreditation in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, and the SADC.
Barlen holds a BSc Honours degree in Agriculture from the University of Mauritius, an M.Ed degree from the Sam Houston University, USA, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Curriculum Development from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He has attended a number of short-term courses related to the teaching of English, Science and the Environment in Mauritius and abroad.
He has had a successful career as a Senior Lecturer at the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) from 1976 to 1995, the year in which he took early retirement from the MIE and joined active politics.
As advisor to the Minister of Education and Science from 2002 to 2005, his satisfaction lies in his humble contribution to the laudable infrastructural improvements brought in the secondary school sector through the construction of 35 new schools in the short time span of 4 years in Mauritius.
Barlen has also contributed in many ways to the cultural landscape in Mauritius through his active role in the organization of cultural activities at the workplace and in social institutions. He has a rich record in the field of theatre, having acted in and produced a number of plays in English, French, Creole, and Tamil, winning a number of awards as Producer and Best Supporting Actor.
